Free Dog Trainers is more than just one-on-one meetings with clients. (Although that is the backbone of the work we do.) Our mission is ultimately about getting everyone access to support from skilled professionals. That includes getting the word out to kids!
'Critter Camp' is an annual summer camp for kids of all ages. Kids come to the shelter to learn about dogs, cats, and all the other critters that our city shelter serves. This year, that included hearing from Apprentice Trainer, Wade Hewlett.
Wade came to Free Dog Trainers after graduating from the formerly local college, Bergin University of Canine Studies. At the time, Founder Devan Amundsen was teaching classes about basic obedience and remediating problem dogs. Wade's class piloted the first free public group classes, which continued to grow until it became Free Dog Trainers, the nonprofit. Now Wade is a core volunteer in Sonoma County, clocking over 75 hours of volunteer time with Free Dog Trainers.
When asked about Critter Camp, Wade said, "The time I spent at Critter Camp was an absolute blast! Getting to know the kids as well as the camp staff meant the world. Having the opportunity to teach about the importance of dog body language, as well as how and when we ask for consent will provide these children with the tools to safely and appropriately approach our canine friends both in and out of the home. Each child left with not just knowledge, but also a deeper connection to our shared mission: To create a community where every interaction is rooted in respect and understanding."
